API key setup for the WP Assist WordPress plugin

Once you've installed and activated the WP Assist WordPress plugin, the final step is to paste your API key into the plugin settings. This key authenticates the connection between your WordPress site and WP Assist, allowing the app to read and update your content securely.

Step 1: Get your API key from WP Assist

  1. Log in to your WP Assist dashboard at wpassist.app.
  2. Go to your site's settings page.
  3. Copy the API key shown on that page. It will be a long string of characters — copy the whole thing.

Step 2: Paste the key into WordPress

  1. Log in to your WordPress admin dashboard.
  2. Go to Settings → WP Assist.
  3. Paste your API key into the API Key field.
  4. Click Save Settings.

Step 3: Confirm the connection

Return to your WP Assist dashboard. Your site should now show a Connected status. If it doesn't, check that the API key was pasted correctly (no leading or trailing spaces) and that the plugin is activated.

Security note: Your API key should be treated like a password. It gives WP Assist the ability to read and update your WordPress content. Don't share it, don't commit it to a public code repository, and don't post it in support tickets. If you believe it's been exposed, regenerate it from the WP Assist dashboard.

Regenerating your API key

If you need to regenerate your API key — for example if you think it's been compromised — you can do so from your WP Assist dashboard. Once regenerated, the old key immediately stops working. You'll need to paste the new key into Settings → WP Assist in WordPress to restore the connection.
